After multiple delays, the TSA announced last week that Real ID enforcement will officially begin on May 7, 2025.

As you may have heard, Real ID is a federally mandated form of identification aimed at enhancing security measures within the United States. It includes specific features to verify your identity, becoming essential for domestic air travel and accessing federal facilities.
Starting May 7, it will be the standard requirement for boarding flights, ensuring safer travels for all passengers. To update your state ID or driver's license, you will need to provide:
Full legal name (birth certificate or valid passport)
Date of birth (birth certificate or valid passport)
Legal presence in the United States (valid passport or current license/ID)
Social Security number (SSN card)
1-2 documents proving current street addresses from various sources
Proof of name change (if applicable)
The process is similar to renewing your driver's license and can be completed at your local BMV. For specific requirements in your state, visit here.
If you prefer not to update your ID and plan to fly after May 7, you can still do so by presenting your valid passport or other compliant identification, details of which can be found here.
Once you have your Real ID, let's plan a fun trip for you to test it out!
