Passport Pitfalls to Avoid

If you're planning international travel this year, your passport deserves more attention than ever.
Many travelers assume that if their passport is in a drawer somewhere, they're ready to go. Unfortunately, I'm hearing more passport-related issues causing travel delays, denied boarding, and last-minute stress than I have in years.
Before you book your next international trip, take a few minutes to check these common passport problems.
Damaged Passports Can Get You Denied Boarding

A passport doesn't have to be torn in half to be considered damaged.
Water damage, loose pages, excessive wear, significant creases, or damage to the cover can all raise concerns with airlines and border officials. Even a small issue that seems cosmetic may be enough to create problems.
If your passport has been through years of travel, pull it out and inspect it carefully. If you're unsure whether it's acceptable, it's usually better to replace it before your trip rather than risk being turned away at the airport.
The Passport Validity Rule

Many travelers are surprised to learn that some countries require a passport to be valid for up to six months beyond travel dates.
For example, a passport expiring in November may not be valid for a July trip depending on your destination.
Requirements vary by country, so it’s important not to assume you’re covered. If your passport expires within the next year, it’s a good time to check entry rules before booking or traveling.
I review this with every client traveling internationally so they feel fully prepared before departure.
Name Mismatches Still Cause Problems

Your airline ticket and passport should match exactly.
This issue often affects travelers who have recently married, divorced, or legally changed their name. If your passport still reflects a previous name while your airline reservation uses your current name, it can create complications at check-in.
Before booking travel, verify that the name on your passport matches the name you plan to use for your reservations.
Emergency Passport Replacements

Lost, stolen, or damaged passports happen more often than people realize.
While emergency passport services exist, they typically require appointments, documentation, additional fees, and a significant amount of stress. During busy travel periods, appointment availability can be limited.
The best strategy is prevention!
If you’re planning international travel and aren’t sure your passport is travel-ready, I’m happy to help you review the requirements before you book and assist you in planning your trip.
