AI and Travel Planning: What You Need to Know

A few years ago, travelers were asking, “Should I use a travel advisor or book online?”

Now it’s evolved into: “Can AI plan my vacation?”

Short answer? Yes… sort of.

AI is an incredibly useful travel tool. It can generate ideas, build itineraries, and answer questions in seconds. But after reviewing AI-planned trips and designing real vacations for clients, one thing is clear:

AI can create a trip. It can’t truly plan a vacation.

Here’s why.

What AI Gets Right

AI is great for getting you unstuck.

It can quickly suggest destinations, build sample itineraries, recommend activities, and answer basic travel questions.

Think of it as a 24/7 brainstorming tool when you’re starting from zero.

What AI Often Misses

AI knows a lot of information, but sometimes that information is out of date or out of context

More importantly, AI doesn’t know you.

It doesn’t know your family needs connecting rooms, that someone in your group has mobility considerations, or that your teen would pick ziplining over museums every time. It also doesn’t know if your ideal vacation is sleeping in and relaxing by the pool.

And it often misses the details that matter most: resort renovations, misleading “close” hotel locations, unrealistic layovers, or seasonal weather that can change everything.

These are small things that make or break a trip, and they don’t always show up in an AI itinerary.

The Human Factor Matters

This is where real planning comes in.

I learn how you actually travel and take into consideration your pace, your priorities, your budget, your travel style.

Some clients want every detail planned. Others want space to relax and explore.

A great vacation isn’t just about where you go. It’s about how well it fits you.

When Things Go Wrong

AI works great when everything goes according to plan, but travel doesn't always cooperate.

Flights get canceled. Weather changes. Hotels have issues. Cruise itineraries shift.

When that happens, AI can’t get on the phone, advocate for you, or rework your plans in real time. But I can!

Why Travelers Are Using Both

It doesn’t have to be either/or.

Many clients use AI to explore ideas and spark inspiration. Then we take those ideas and turn them into something realistic, personalized, and stress-free.

But tools don’t replace expertise.

They support it.AI can help you imagine the trip.  A Travel Advisor helps make sure it works in real life!
