How to Take Great Travel Photos Using Just Your Phone

You don’t need fancy equipment to capture incredible travel memories—just the phone already in your pocket! With a little practice and a few simple tips, you can snap frame-worthy photos on your next adventure.

Here’s how to level up your phone photography:

1.  Practice Before You Go

The best time to get comfortable with your phone camera? Before your trip.

Snap photos around your house, in your backyard, or on a walk. Pay attention to how your phone handles different lighting, shadows, and angles. Want to practice for specific shots?

  • Architecture? Your house exterior works.

  • Gallery vibes? Try snapping framed art at home.

  • Candid people shots? Bribe a friend or family member to be your practice model.

2.  Skip the Flash

Natural light is your best friend. Phone flashes often wash out colors or create harsh shadows. Turn off your flash and seek soft, natural light instead.

Too dark? Try turning on your flash only as a last resort—or better yet, bring a small clip-on light for low-light settings.

3.  Think Beyond Photos - Try Video

Sometimes, the perfect moment happens too quickly for a still shot. Record a short video and grab your favorite frame as a screenshot later.

Bonus Tip: A mini tripod or selfie stick lets you get in the photo and stay present in the moment.

4.  Get to Know Your Camera Settings & Apps

Most phones have impressive built-in features—take time to explore them! Adjust exposure, focus, and use portrait mode when it fits. Even the auto-correction tool can work wonders.

Want to take it up a notch? Try easy-to-use apps like:

📱 Lightroom Mobile – Great for quick editing

📱 FirstLight – Helpful for manual camera settings

5.  Scout Instagram for Inspiration

Before your trip, search Instagram hashtags or location tags for your destination. You’ll find hidden photo spots and get ideas for creative angles or compositions.

6.  Make Room for Memories

Running out of storage mid-trip? Not fun. Before you leave, upload your existing photos to your laptop or the cloud to free up space.

After your trip, back everything up again—some edits and organizing are just easier on a bigger screen.
