We Postponed Our Dream Trip

2 min read

This year marks our 30th wedding anniversary, and for years my husband and I planned to celebrate in Paris and London.

A few months ago, we changed our minds. Not because we couldn't go, but because we realized we didn't want to.

The past few years have mostly been wonderful...but also exhausting. Our three kids have all graduated college and launched into their careers, and we've helped move them in and out of numerous dorms, apartments and across state lines.  Add my husband's mother passing after a health emergency last year, my aging parents and their health issues plus some hiccups of our along the way, and we realized we're just tired.

As much as I love exploring, this year I realized what I really needed was rest.  We're heading somewhere we can slow down.

Pool.

Beach.

Repeat.

That decision reminded me of something I see all the time.

The wrong vacation at the wrong time can lead to trip disappointment!

Not because the destination wasn't amazing, but because:

  • We build impossible expectations.

  • We pack every minute with activities.

  • We book the place everyone has said we HAVE to visit.

  • We choose a trip that doesn't fit the season of life we're in.

The best vacation isn't always the most exciting one.

Sometimes it's the one you need.

As a travel advisor, that's why I ask so many questions before I recommend a destination. I'm not trying to find the "best" vacation.

I'm trying to find the best vacation for you, right now.

Our European anniversary trip isn't canceled...it's just waiting for the right season, and I have a feeling we'll enjoy it even more when that time comes.

Have you ever changed vacation plans because life changed? I'd love to hear it.
