From Carpools to Cross-Country: What You Need in Your Car Right Now

As road trip season kicks into full gear, so does the time we spend in our cars whether you’re shuttling kids home from college, heading to weekend tournaments, gathering for family reunions, or setting out on a long-awaited vacation.

While the destination is exciting, a smooth, safe, and enjoyable drive can make all the difference in how the trip begins.

A little preparation goes a long way. Here’s what I always recommend having in your car to keep everyone safe, comfortable, and (mostly) happy along the way.

Safety First (Always)

Before you think about snacks and playlists, start with the essentials. You’ll want a well-stocked emergency kit that includes a first-aid kit, flashlight (with extra batteries), jumper cables, and a basic tool kit.

A portable phone charger or power bank is non-negotiable, especially if you’re relying on your phone for directions.

It’s also smart to keep a blanket or two in the car. They come in handy for everything from unexpected weather to roadside waits. And don’t forget a reusable water bottle for each traveler because hydration matters more than we think, especially on long drives.

If you’re traveling through unfamiliar or rural areas, consider having a printed map as backup. Technology is great… until it isn’t.

Comfort is Key

Hours in the car can take a toll, so think about what will keep everyone comfortable.

Neck pillows, light layers (because car temperatures are never universally agreed upon), and easy-to-remove shoes or cozy socks can make a big difference.

For families with younger kids, a small tote within reach filled with comfort items like favorite stuffed animals, blankets, or even a familiar pillow can help make the car feel a little more like home.

Snack Smart

Road trip snacks are part of the fun, but a little strategy helps avoid mess and meltdowns. Aim for a mix of protein, something crunchy, and a small treat. Pre-portioning snacks into individual bags or containers saves you from constant requests to “pass the whole bag back.”

A small cooler is a game changer. It keeps drinks cold and gives you healthier options like fruit, cheese sticks, and sandwiches.

Entertainment That Actually Works

Let’s be honest—entertainment can make or break a road trip. Create a shared playlist ahead of time so everyone gets a say, or download a few podcasts or audiobooks for longer stretches of driving.

Think beyond screens. Travel games, card decks, activity books, and even simple things like a notebook for journaling or drawing can go a long way. And yes, devices are part of the reality.  Just be sure everything is downloaded ahead of time in case Wi-Fi is spotty.

The “Nice-to-Have” Extras

There are a few small items that don’t seem essential until you really need them. Wet wipes, hand sanitizer, tissues, a small trash bag, and paper towels will keep your car (and your sanity) intact.

I also recommend keeping a spare change of clothes easily accessible, especially if you’re traveling with kids or heading straight to an event when you arrive.

A Final Thought

Road trips are about more than just getting from point A to point B. They’re the start of the memories—the singalongs, the snacks, the unexpected detours, and the conversations you don’t get anywhere else.

A little planning ahead means fewer headaches and more space to enjoy the ride. And isn’t that what travel is really about?

If you’ve got a road trip coming up this season, I’d love to hear where you’re headed; and of course, I’m always here to help make the journey as seamless as the destination. To learn more about me, go here. To start planning your next trip, email me!
