Biggest Travel Mistakes & How to Avoid Them

We’ve all heard the horror stories…

Missed flights. Lost luggage. Showing up to a dream destination only to realize something important was overlooked.

The good news? Most travel mishaps aren’t bad luck.  They’re preventable.

A little planning (and the right support) can turn a stressful trip into a seamless one. Here are some of the biggest travel mistakes I see and how to avoid them:

Mistake #1:  Cutting It Too Close

The Fix: Give yourself breathing room.

Tight connections and last-minute airport arrivals might look fine on paper…until real life happens. Delays, long security lines, or gate changes can quickly derail your plans.

Pro tip: Aim to arrive at the airport earlier than you think you need to, and avoid short layovers.  I recommend at least 90 minutes for domestic flights and 2 hours for international.

Mistake #2:  Packing Everything

The Fix: Pack smart, not heavy.

Overpacking leads to stress, extra fees, and hauling bags you don’t need. Underpacking can leave you scrambling at your destination.

Pro tip: Stick to versatile outfits in coordinating colors to mix and match, check the weather ahead of time, and always pack essentials (medications, a change of clothes) in your carry-on.

Mistake #3:  Overlooking Travel Documents

The Fix: Double-check everything before you go.

Passport expiration dates, visa requirements, entry forms.  These details matter more than most people realize.

Pro tip: Some countries require your passport to be valid for 6 months beyond your travel dates. Always check requirements well in advance.

Mistake #4:  Assuming Your Card Will Work Everywhere

The Fix: Prepare your payment options.

Not all destinations are as credit-card-friendly as you might expect, and foreign transaction fees can add up quickly.

Pro tip: Bring a backup card, notify your bank before traveling, and carry a small amount of local currency.

Mistake #5:  Trying to Do Too Much

The Fix: Slow down and enjoy it.

It’s tempting to pack your itinerary with everything you could do, but that often leads to exhaustion instead of enjoyment.

Pro tip: Leave room for downtime, spontaneity, and simply soaking in where you are.

Mistake #6:  Planning Trips Alone

The Fix: Have an expert in your corner.

Between changing airline policies, entry requirements, and endless options, planning travel can get overwhelming fast.

Pro tip: Working with a travel advisor means you have someone handling the details, watching for issues, and making sure nothing falls through the cracks.

Travel should feel exciting, not stressful.

Avoiding these common mistakes isn’t about being perfect… it’s about being prepared. And when you have the right plan (and the right support), everything runs smoother.
