Big Changes Coming for European Travel

If you’re planning a trip to Europe in the next couple of years, there are some important updates you’ll want to know. The EU is rolling out two new systems designed to modernize border control and enhance security. And while that may sound complicated, don’t worry, I’ll break it down for you.

What is the Entry/Exit System (EES)?

Starting October 12, 2025, the EU will begin introducing the Entry/Exit System (EES). This is a new digital border check system for non-EU citizens visiting the Schengen Area (think France, Spain, Italy, Greece, and more).

Here’s what travelers can expect:

  • First-time visitors will need to register fingerprints and a photo at a kiosk or with a border officer.

  • The registration is valid for 3 years, so you only do it once.

  • There may be longer lines at first, especially at Dover, Eurostar, and Eurotunnel crossings.

The goal is stronger security and, over time, a much smoother travel experience.

What is ETAIS and How Is It Different?

ree

Following shortly after EES, the EU will launch the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), currently expected in late 2026.

Think of ETIAS like the U.S. ESTA:

  • It’s an online pre-travel authorisation linked to your passport.

  • The cost will be €20, and it’s valid for 3 years.

Where EES happens at the border, ETIAS is something you’ll complete before you leave home.

EES vs ETAIS: A Quick Snapshot

ree

  • EES = Border control process (fingerprints + photo, done once, valid 3 years).

  • ETIAS = Pre-travel authorisation (online form + fee, valid 3 years).

Both systems will work together to make travel more secure while keeping the flow of visitors moving across borders.

What This Means for You

ree

Yes, these new systems will require a little extra planning and patience at first. But they’re designed to make travel safer and easier in the long run.

And the best part? You don’t have to navigate it alone. I’ll be keeping track of these changes and guiding my clients through every step, so you can focus on enjoying your adventure instead of worrying about paperwork and border checks.
