Travel Protection: What Works and What Doesn't

Even the most carefully planned trips can go sideways...blizzards, hurricanes, or unrest in places like Mexico, Iran, or Dubai can disrupt travel in unexpected ways.
While I’ve recently written about travel protection, recent global developments mean it’s important to go deeper and explain exactly what travel protection does and doesn’t cover, and how I, as your advisor, can help you navigate disruptions.
What Travel Protection DOES Cover

Trip Cancellation – If a covered event prevents travel before departure (e.g., severe weather, sudden illness).
Travel Delay – Meals, lodging, and transportation after a qualifying delay (usually 6–12+ hours).
Missed Connection – If a weather or airline delay causes you to miss a cruise, tour, or scheduled departure.
Emergency Assistance – Help with medical, legal, or safety issues abroad.
Political/Security Evacuation – Available on select plans if authorities require evacuation.
Cancel/Interruption for Any Reason (CFAR/IFAR) – Partial reimbursement even when the reason isn’t specifically listed, if eligibility rules are met.
What Travel Protection Does NOT Cover

Canceling simply because you’re worried about unrest or bad weather (unless CFAR/IFAR applies).
Events known before policy purchase (like a storm already forecasted, even if it hasn't been named yet).
Out-of-pocket expenses if you make self- arranged changes outside your policy rules.
Airline or hotel fees not documented or not covered under the plan.
How to Make Travel Protection Work

Buy EARLY – Policies purchased before disruptions arise give you the best coverage.
Know Your Policy – Read the fine print so you know exactly what’s covered.
Document Everything – Keep receipts for hotels, meals, transportation, and communications.
Use Assistance Services – Many policies include 24/7 help navigating delays, evacuations, or medical emergencies.
Plan Ahead – Sign up for airline alerts, monitor government advisories, and have backup lodging or transportation options.
How I Help as Your Advisor

When travel goes off track, you’re not alone. Here’s what I do to support you:
Real-Time Guidance: I monitor alerts for weather, civil unrest, and other disruptions and advise you on next steps with real sources...not social media.
Airline Monitoring: I monitor your actual plane to see where delays may happen even before they're announced and help sort out alternative routes for your consideration.
On-the-Ground Support: If you’re abroad, I can coordinate hotels or transportation to reduce stress.
Proactive Planning: I make sure your policies, excursions, and reservations are structured so you have maximum flexibility if something changes.
Airlines move planes, travel protection protects you, but having a knowledgeable advisor ensures you can take advantage of both efficiently.
Knowing what works, what doesn’t, and having someone to guide you turns travel chaos into confidence.
