Another Travel Rule to Know Before You Fly

If you’ve flown recently, you already know the rules around identification keep tightening. The TSA announced another change that travelers should have on their radar...especially if you don’t yet have a REAL ID.

Here’s the breakdown:

What's New

Beginning February 1, 2026, travelers who show up to airport security without an acceptable form of ID will still be allowed to fly but with a catch.

TSA will offer an optional process called TSA ConfirmID, which allows travelers to verify their identity for a $45 fee. The fee covers a 10-day travel window.

If you don’t have a REAL ID (or another acceptable ID) and still want to travel, this is the path TSA will send you down.

What Counts as an Acceptable ID

To avoid the fee and delays, travelers should have one of the following:

  • REAL ID–compliant driver’s license or state ID

  • U.S. passport or passport card

  • Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST cards

  • Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL/EID)

  • Military ID or Permanent Resident Card

One important reminder: temporary driver’s licenses do NOT count.

If you’re unsure whether your ID is REAL ID compliant, check with your state DMV.

What This Means at the Airport

TSA says more than 94% of travelers already use acceptable ID, but for those who don’t:

  • Expect longer wait times

  • Expect extra screening steps

  • Expect potential stress if you’re cutting it close

TSA plans to allow travelers to pay the $45 fee online in advance, but anyone using ConfirmID should still plan for delays.

My Advice

While ConfirmID is an option, it’s not one I’d recommend relying on.

If you travel even occasionally:

  • Check your ID now

  • Schedule your REAL ID appointment sooner rather than later

  • Travel with a passport when possible

  • Don’t assume this will be quick or seamless at the airport

This is one of those rules that won’t affect everyone; but when it does, it can absolutely derail a trip.
