What to Pack in Your Carry-On

With flight delays and schedule changes becoming more common, it’s essential to pack your carry-on wisely. Here’s what you should always keep with you to make your journey smoother, no matter what comes your way.

Travel Documents & Essentials

Keep your passport or ID, travel itinerary, and travel insurance documents within easy reach—whether in an accessible pocket of your bag or jacket, or saved as photos in a dedicated album on your phone. You won’t want to dig through your luggage to find the address of your hotel or proof of coverage.

Medications & Health Supplies

ree

Always pack any prescriptions, with extra doses for a few additional days just in case. Include over-the-counter medications for headaches, nausea, or motion sickness—these small items can make a big difference during travel disruptions.

Chargers & Tech Must-Haves

ree

Bring chargers for all your devices (including Bluetooth headphones/airpods!), plus a fully charged battery pack. Power outlets may be scarce and have their security concerns, and sharing cords with strangers is awkward when everyone’s managing their own travel challenges. Personally, I have a small travel pouch with chargers strictly for travel to ensure I don't forget one.

Comfort Essentials

A travel pillow, eye mask, and earplugs can make flights and airport waits far more bearable. Pack a light layer—like a shawl, jacket, or small blanket—that can keep you warm or double as a pillow when needed.

Spare Clothes

ree

Tuck a change of clothes into your carry-on: socks, undergarments, a swimsuit (if needed), and a full outfit. Most delayed bags catch up within 36 hours—this small step helps you stay comfortable while you wait.

Toiletries

Don’t forget the basics! Toothbrush, toothpaste, face wipes, comb, lotion, lip balm, glasses, and contact supplies. You’ll feel so much better freshening up during an unexpected delay.

Pack Your Patience

Delays and disruptions happen, and they’re often about keeping you safe. Take a deep breath, stay flexible, and remember—kindness goes a long way toward making a tough situation easier for everyone.
