Let's Talk Passports: What you REALLY need to know

Whether you’re planning your next big adventure or just daydreaming about one, your passport deserves a little attention. Here are the most important things to know about expiration dates, renewals, and what to do if yours goes missing.

It Expires Sooner Than You Think

Check your passport’s expiration date… now. See that date? If you have international travel plans, your passport may need to be valid for at least 6 months after your planned return date, depending on your destination.

Many countries won’t let you board your flight—or even enter—if your passport is too close to expiring. It’s one of those sneaky details that can completely derail a trip if overlooked.

Bottom line: Don’t wait. Check your expiration date and give yourself plenty of time to renew.

Emergency Passport Renewals

Need a passport in a hurry? It happens. There are options, but they come with fine print:

⭐ Life-or-Death Emergency Service — For urgent travel within 3 days due to a family member's death, critical illness, or hospice situation. Proof is required.

⭐ Urgent Travel Service — For non-life-threatening travel happening within 14 days. You’ll need to make an in-person appointment at a U.S. Passport Agency (appointments are limited and not guaranteed).

Routine & Expedited Renewals

If your passport is due for renewal, plan ahead:

✉️ By Mail: Most standard renewals can be done by mail, but your current passport will need to be sent in.

⏳ Current Processing Times:

  • Routine Renewal: 10-13 weeks

  • Expedited Renewal: 7-9 weeks (plus shipping time)

Tip: Add 2 extra weeks for mailing both ways—just to be safe.

Keep Your Passport Safe & Accessible

ree

Your passport should live in a secure, easy-to-access place at home—think fireproof safe, not the back of a drawer.

When traveling, make a photocopy of your passport and tuck it in a separate part of your luggage. If your passport is lost or stolen abroad, that copy can help speed up replacement through the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

I’m happy to help make sure your travel documents (and your trip!) are ready to go. ✈️
