Hotel Safety: Simple Tips for a More Secure Stay

When planning a vacation, most travelers focus on where they'll go and what they'll do. One thing that's often overlooked is hotel safety.

Fortunately, staying safe doesn't require expensive gadgets or complicated planning. A few simple habits can help make your stay more secure.

Choose Your Hotel Carefully

Hotel safety starts before you ever arrive.

While price and amenities matter, I also encourage travelers to consider the hotel's location, neighborhood, and guest reviews. A great rate isn't always a great value if you don't feel comfortable in the area.

When I help clients choose accommodations, I'm looking beyond the photos to recommend hotels that are a good fit for your travel style, location preferences, and overall safety.

Take a Few Minutes After Check-In

Once you're in your room:

  • Lock the deadbolt and security latch whenever you're inside.

  • Locate the nearest emergency exit and review the evacuation map.

  • Keep your room number private.

  • Store passports, extra cash, and valuables in the room safe when available.

These simple steps take only a few minutes and can make a big difference.

Stay Aware

Whether you're relaxing by the pool, eating in the hotel restaurant, or working in the lobby, avoid leaving valuables unattended and be mindful of your surroundings.

If you're using hotel Wi-Fi, avoid accessing sensitive accounts unless you're using a secure connection.
