Vacations are all about relaxing and exploring, but leaving your home behind?

That can be stressful if you’re unprepared. From keeping your house secure to saving energy and avoiding unpleasant surprises, a few simple steps go a long way. Use this quick checklist to lock in peace of mind and travel worry-free!

Exterior Prep

  • Set an exterior light on a timer (motion-detecting is even better)

  • Park cars in the garage or move them off the street

  • Stop newspaper and mail delivery (USPS.gov)

  • Arrange lawn care if needed

Utilities & Notifications

  • Adjust thermostat closer to outdoor temps to save energy

  • Notify a neighbor that you’ll be away

  • Inform your credit card company of travel plans

  • Turn off or set hot water heater to vacation mode

Appliances & Kitchen

  • Run dishwasher and leave empty

  • Empty trash and remove perishable food

  • Unplug small appliances and turn off water valves

  • Freeze a clear water bottle and place in fridge to check power outages upon return

  • Clean garbage disposal with water and vinegar

Final Checks

  • Lock all doors and windows

  • Make sure counters are clean and laundry is done

  • Adjust thermostat for energy savings and home safety

  • Ensure beds are made and home is tidy

Home secured. Thermostat set. Trash gone. Adventure awaits...let the fun begin!
